A public reflection
It's Just a Comment...Or Is It?
Have you ever noticed how social media slowly changes the way we communicate? The longer we spend scrolling through posts, videos, and discussions, the more we become attached to likes, comments, and reactions. Over time, leaving an opinion online starts to feel effortless. Sometimes, without even realizing it, we judge people we've never met or leave comments that are harsher than we would ever say face to face.
I think that's one of the biggest effects of social media. A screen creates distance, making us forget that every profile belongs to a real person with real emotions. We may disagree with someone, find their content annoying, or simply want to express our frustration. But in that moment, it's easy to forget that our words can stay with someone much longer than we intended. What feels like a quick comment to us could become something they remember for days, weeks, or even years.
Maybe this doesn't mean people are naturally cruel. Perhaps it's just easier to say hurtful things when we don't have to witness the consequences. That's why I believe we should always pause before posting anything. Asking ourselves one simple question—"Would I say this if they were standing right in front of me?"—might stop us from writing something we'll regret. Kindness doesn't cost anything, but it can mean everything to the person reading our words.
